The Wide Blue Yonder: Some links of interest.

Surfing the web

While searching the web this week, I came across a few sites that might be of interest to other Mac users.

Expansion

All those people who feel the need to either expand their system or speed it up will find the following sites useful:

The Macintosh Compatible PCI Product Directory is a site that lists over 250 PCI cards for the Mac, as well as what they do, and where to get them.

Not sure if your Mac is PCI based? Run over to MacAddict and have a look at their Q&A section for this week.

If you are running an older Mac (like me) you might find the need to use the services of either MicroMac Technology or Sonnet Technologies . Both these companies offer hardware products to make that old Mac of yours work a little harder. Everything from extra memory to new processors is offered, including PowerPC processor upgrades. People interested in upgrading old Macs should check out the MacUser article on Lifesaving Measures for your old Mac which has hints for making old Macs more useful.

For those without the money to spend Extensions Overload is a site that lists the common extensions and control panels found in your system folder. More importantly it lists those that you can do without. By getting rid of extensions and control panels you not only speed up your Mac, but the extra disk space and memory doesn't go astray either. Oh, it also costs you nothing.

Mac Personalities Download.com has some profiles of Mac programmers and small company developers that make interesting reading. While you're looking, download.com is not a bad site for Macintosh shareware and freeware, as well as commercial demos.

Other links

Macintosh Links is a site with sorted links to Mac-centric web sites. Everything from news, hardware reviews to Mac evangalism is listed.

I have also expanded the links section on the Suite101 Mac page. It is accessed by clicking on the more links icon near the 5top list.

Virtual PC

MacOS Rumours has some screen shots of Connectix Virtual PC running Windows 95 and NT, as well as NeXT's OpenStep/Mach 4.1, as given out at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference. They also report that the speed is between three and four times that of SoftWindows on the same computers.
