Apple's cache bug fix. Apple has released a bug fix for MacOS 7.6.1. It is for a problem that was turning the level two (L2) cache of Performa 5400, 6360 or 6400 off. Also, Power Computing's Powerbase models and Umax's SuperMac C600 and C500 lines were affected by this problem. Apple found the problem was in the "54xx/64xx Update 1.1" extension. People who have one of these computers, MacOS 7.5.3 or later and also the "54xx/64xx Update 1.1" extension should also get this update.

MacOS 8 Beta version. Yes it's gone beta, and Apple has decided to let everyone take a look, toddle over to here to take a look at a screen capture of it running, and an Apple commentary of what it is doing (basically finder level multitasking).

Apple white paper on MacOS in Rhapsody compatibility. Apple has released a White paper on MacOS compatibility under Rhapsody. . A short summary of the white paper's major points is:

1)The compatibility environment will run as a separate Rhapsody process, with MacOS programs, inits, extensions and CDEVS being run inside this process.
2)Both Power Mac native and 680x0 code will run in the compatibility process.
3)Programs that interface substantially with the OS should run faster in the Rhapsody compatibility mode, then under normal MacOS.
4)Programs that interface directly with the hardware will not run under the new OS. This is to protect the Rhapsody environment from compatibility area crashes.
5)The compatibility environment is memory protected, so crashes in it will not bring down the computer, and only the compatibility environment will need to be restarted if a program in the compatibility environment causes a crash.
6)The white paper lists exactly what type of programs will and wont run in the compatibility environment, and you should read the white paper to fully understand which programs are which.

The ability to boot either Rhapsody or MacOS on the same computer will be supported by Apple.

The latest version of Rhapsody I've heard about is Internal Version 6(iv6). There is some rather poor pictures of an early Rhapsody release, also a screencapture of NeXTStep 4.0 which was never released. Something from it will make it into Rhapsody, so it is of some interest.
