A Conference For Lymphedema Patients

The Good news is, Lymphedema patients will have a place to go to learn more about their disorder. The bad news is it's not until next summer and it will cost you some money.

The National Lymphedema Network (NLN) ( http://www.lymphnet.org ) is sponsoring a patient summit as part of an extended program of their annual NLN Conference. The summit will be held August 28, and 29, 2002 at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.

According to the NLN, this will be an intensive educational program for Lymphedema patients, family members and the general public. This program features information on Cancer & Lymphedema, Secondary Lymphedema Unrelated to Cancer, Primary vs. Secondary Lymphedema, Clinical Observations & Therapies Approaches to Fitness & Lymphedema and Innovative Research.

Other Sessions include:

The Science of Lymphedema: Pathophysiology for Patients Exercise Instruction for Upper/Lower Extremity Lymphedema Self-Care Methods Meet the Professor Current Issues in Health Insurance Coverage Advocacy & Legislative Issues Special Session for Parents of Children with Lymphedema & Related Disorders

There will also be what's called a patient clinic. This is where two panels of physicians, therapists and experienced patients discuss challenging patient case histories, presented by the patients, themselves.

If you wish to register for the Patient Summit programs, just send an e mail to mailto:conference.lymphnet.org. In your e mail write your name, mailing address and telephone number. You can also call the NLN office at (510) 208-3200 between the hours of 9AM to 5PM Pacific Time. However, programs and registration forms will not be available until July 2, 2002.

Keep in mind, unless you live in Chicago that you will also need hotel reservations. The conference takes place at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in downtown Chicago. A block of rooms has been reserved for conference attendees at special reduced rates: Single or double: $125.00 Elegant Tower accommodations: $199.00.

These rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning in December. Be sure to make your reservations early. To reserve, call (800) 233-4100 or 312-464-1000 (best time to call is 7:00 AM-8:00 PM central) and identify yourself as a participant of the National Lymphedema Network Conference to receive the reduced room rate. Room reservations made after July 28, 2002 are subject to availability at regular hotel rates.
