GOOD NEWS! LYMPHEDEMA IS FINALLY IN THE HEADLINES

Here is an open letter from Wendy Chaite, founder of the Lymphatic Research Foundation:

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Help us seize this moment in time! Please share this email with others!

A July 28, 2005 news feature in Nature (a highly regarded scientific journal) recognized at last, that the field of lymphatics is an important area of science and medicine! The article is entitled Unlocking the Drains. After centuries of playing second fiddle to the blood system, our lymphatic circulation is coming into its own as a key player in diseases ranging from cancer to asthma.

The news feature highlights the historical complete lack of interest in the field and that for centuries lymphatics were [considered] unimportant. The article continues, Not any more. Once dismissed as a mere drainage network, the body's second circulation system is emerging as a crucial player in numerous diseases from cancer to asthma, and as a vital part of the normal immune system. As a result of these discoveries, researchers are trying to intervene in its activities, for example to reduce the spread of tumors, to boost efficiency of vaccines, and to treat the painful and disfiguring swelling known as lymphedema. Leading researchers are quoted as saying that [lymphatic research] is a hot field now and that this is a pioneering time.

Without a doubt, the Lymphatic Research Foundation's creation has provided the milieu to ripen this field. LRF has been the beacon of light and hope to millions of disenfranchised patients who suffer from lymphatic diseases and lymphedema. We need to use this very important, credible scientific publication to continue to shed light on LRF's mission.

As more and more researchers become attracted to lymphatics we can capture their interest toward finding improved treatments and cures for lymphatic diseases and lymphedema. If you know anyone in public relations or the media who can help us bring public exposure to this credible scientific news feature to gain greater public awareness about the importance of the lymphatic system and the need for research, I would be forever grateful. For more information about LRF, visit http://www.lymphaticresearch.org I wish to take this opportunity to thank those who have helped us
