NLN Conventions

Lymphedema remains one of the most un-diagnosed conditions in the field of medicine. Sadly, most physicians are not trained to recognize lymphedema. If you have lymphedema, or know someone who does, or if you are being treated for lymphedema, you just might want to spread the word about this upcoming conference.

Every two years, the NLN (National Lymphedema Network) sponsors a conference related to lymphedema. Each conference gets better and better. This is a "must attend" conference for all healthcare professionals who deal with lymphedema. It is also a great starting point for the medical professionals who want to increase their knowledge about this condition.

The National Lymphedema Network will host their 6th international conference, Frontiers in Lymphedema Research and Therapy, October 20-24, 2004 in Reno, Nevada. Sessions, for physicians and healthcare professionals, will include wound care, oncological LE, differential diagnosis, physiology of the lymphatic system, conventional, alternative and investigational treatment, palliative care, diet and nutrition, psychosocial issues, molecular function, genetics, basic, applied and translational research, embryology of the lymphatic system, and lymphangiogenesis

Extended sessions will include how to access, critique and apply research, issues in health insurance and reimbursement, lymphatic imaging, pediatric and adolescent challenges, writing a fundable research grant, head and neck edema, advanced problem solving for LE therapists and advocacy and lobbying for health care policy change.

While this conference is open only to physicians and healthcare professionals, the NLN will host a Patient Summit in August 2005. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend an NLN conference several years ago and I urge you to have your LE therapist attend if at all possible. The exhibits are bountiful; the speakers the premier experts on LE; the staff accommodating and the entire 5 days are jam-packed with up to date information and resources that you won't find anywhere else.

The NLN has always been the forerunner in lymphedema education and awareness. If you can go to this conference, it will be money well spent. Reno is a lovely setting for a conference and the casino activities and the beautiful surroundings make this an ideal location for a combined business/pleasure trip.

Remember to check out your LE therapist's credentials. Just because someone is a massage therapist or physical therapist does not mean that they are certified to treat lymphedema. There are several schools which accredit LE therapists. The instructional programs generally last about 2 weeks and include lectures, reading and hands-on practice. LANA, the Lymphology Association of North America, now offers a testing mechanism to certify lymphedema therapists.
