CATALINA ISLAND FOR FUN AND ADVENTURE


You can also rent inflatable, sit-on-top or advanced cruising kayaks, small sailboats, power boats for skiing and such, and various personal watercraft like jet skis parasail folks and the lame and lazy or those tuckered out from Hiking Catalina's hills, take a ride on the Starlight "semi-submersible" a glorified glass-bottom boat. We like the night cruise. What else on a "Starlight?" Other cruises head out to watch flying fish, look for whales or head out to Seal Rocks or twilight dining at Two Harbors.

We take it easy on the beach. There's a lot to do and some extremely fit folks to watch as they play volleyball and such in -- at least most of the time -- amazingly skimpy bathing suits.

You can fish too. Shore and pier fishing with light gear offers small fish like croakers, mackerel and the likebillfishr boats for billfish or head boats which take you out into the kelp expand your piscatorial opportunities and rent tackle. You can book all of the above near the dock where the tour boats unload.

On land, newcomers to Catalina should take a Catalina shuttle bus that runs between Avalon and Two Harbors with all sorts of stops at trails, camps and other attractions, or consider the Skyline Drive tour along the island's saurian backbone. If the hills of Avalon make your dogs bark, save your feet with a rented gas-powered golf cart under the Holly Hill House or sit out the Avalon Scenic Tour.

Hikers find some of the best trails in California lead down to deserted coves and quiet rocky beaches. Just remember the trail back up is much, much steeper! In town, a special tour of the old casino and its well-known ballroom, theatre and a pass to the museum deserve a couple of hours during the middle of the day when its a bit hot to fry around the pool.

Of course all visitors shop and eat -- it's a Catalina rule that you've got to have something edible, and often melting, in one hand. Ice cream in waffle cones, cotton candy, corn dogs, snow cones, squid or clam chowder, hot-dogs and other plain to just plain, no apology needed, junk food is everywhere. Stands, al fresco gardens, water view street, deck or patio dining lets you complete your suntan, or burn. Did I mention a need for a brimmed hat, sun block and sun glasses,
