Espace Montmartre Salvador Dali (Surrealism)

Dali's space defines strange. It's as dark as the Scroll Gallery in the Beijing’s Forbidden City and the spectral voice of Dali echoes as lights move from one Surrealist work to another. Nobody forgets the melting pocket watches and such, and it's a special hit with kids and the young at heart who also enjoy riding the funicular up to Sacre Coeur – don't miss the interior and the view of Paris.

It's not far to the Musée du Montmartre at 12 Run Cortot if you want to know more about the area’s history, or rest your feet with coffee at a café like A La Mere Catherine up the street, where the term "bistro" apparently started. Grandma Moses fans of primitive painting find hundreds of examples the Musee d'Art Naif Max Fourny down the stairs in front of the Sacre Coeur, but stay out of Place du Tertre to reduce your chance of meeting pickpockets.

TIP: it's worth the downhill walk to Place des Abbesses as you kibitz the street artists because of the wonderful Art Nouveau metro station entrance and decent cafés. Note that "ladies of rental virtue" bloom over into Place Pigalle after dark.

Nearest Metro: Anvers and use your metro passes up the funicular to avoid walking up the steep hill. Stroll downhill and take Abbesses or Pigalle home. Open: 10:00 to 16:00 every day.

Musee de la Chasse et del la Nature (Nature & Hunting)

Hunters and those interested in arms will find the unique collection of hunting weapons, mounted animals, and some splendid paintings and drawings well worth the walk over from the Hotel de Ville metro stop. The building is one of the best 17th century homes in Paris with a lovely formal garden. It's close to the Picasso Museum and convenient to the Pompidou Center. Spousal note: it's great spot to stash "significant others" more interested in hunting than art.

Then consider a pastry break on Rue du Rostiers or a dip into the Musee Carnavalet's got more Paris history than you can cover in a day.

TIP: Pop up at the metro station at Hotel de Ville, Paris's City Hall -- worth a visit --and check the Seine before heading up into the Marais. Crepes from the stand here are made to order, not stacked, so they’re a nice treat.

Nearest Metro: Hotel de Ville Hours: 10:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:30 Wednesday through Monday.
