Atlantic City Golf

New Jersey's Atlantic City, shore and pine barrens doubtless conceal the greatest collection of golf courses and links in the Northwest. Consider the topography and shore links courses should be no surprise, but it's the organization and access that makes it happen here for golfers who look past the casinos. How about Internet tee-time booking in real time at http://www.gacga.com?" According to Patricia Vanderstine, President of the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association, "In our mission to make South Jersey an east coast golf destination, on-line booking is a necessary tool for golfers to plan their outings and vacation."

So with bookings available it's only necessary to select from the ten championship golf courses in the area. Here's a look at the top eight, to be fair, alphabetical order:

Blue Heron Pines East Golf Club opened in May of 2000, it's a monster 7300 foot course for all the big hitters who like wide fairways and big greens and tees with just enough bunkers to keep interest up. It should improve as it matures.

Blue Heron Pines Golf Club http://www.blueheronpines.com has won too many awards to count and is definitely a top three public course in Jersey. The "interesting" plantings around the water hazards and the rolling greens are strong features and, nicely enough, the spread between the 6810 long tees and the 5053 short tees seem ideal for mixed groups.

Brigantine Golf Links has reminded golfers of Scottish links in that it kicks out Tiger Woods scores on rare windless days, and requires considered club choice and the ability to play well in the wind most of the time. Pro golfers headed for Britain often practiced here as the course is "proper Brit" with it's 100+ bunkers and mounds, even though it plays a tad easier than it's par 72 ratings. TIP: Duffers who play off the 5545 silver tees enjoy a 68.3 rating, while the long tees rate 71.9.

Greate Bay Golf Club was laid out in 1923 by Scots architect, Willie Park, Junior, redesigned in the 1970's by the Fazios. "All holes are signature holes. . . they require careful thought and attention." A 1998 renovation polished up this old gem. Problems starts with the problem of keeping one's head down rather than looking out at Greate Egg Harbor Bay. The Par 70 course runs 6705 off the long tees and 5349 off the shortest, but the 72 rating of the blues and 71.9 rating of the reds suggests tricks and subtleties not always found on today's hit the ball a mile courses.
