COEUR d' ALENE: AMERICA'S MOST BEAUTIFUL ALPINE LAKE Part 3

Morning hikes up Tubbs Hill, the rather prominent hill just behind the Coeur d'Alene Resort, offer a good look at town, the best angle for pictures of the resort, and a chance to stretch your legs. The odd-looking outer boundary floats of the resort's massive marina is another walker's delight; at 3,300 feet long it's reportedly the world's longest floating boardwalk. If you'd like a "no sweat" look at town and resort try Brook Aviation floatplanes for an even better look. Ask about family rates.

We don't golf much, but early tee times at the Avondale Course seem worthwhile -- see listings. The spectacular Coeur d'Alene Golf course deserves special mention. It's all bent grass and features a floating green with a ferry to the rest of the holes and the resort. Their driving range has floating balls too. I suspect golfers might want to invest in a few extra balls for this one. You might also need extra dollars. Prices run $100 or so!

About the time most tourists get up, we hit the municipal beach for a short swim, take a quick paddle out around the log booms along the Spokane River or hit a few tennis balls. Tennis types can stick to the tennis courts on North Idaho College Campus near the east end of the Municipal Beach.

Other "Stuff" for Kids and the Young at Heart Kids have all sorts of options if you can drag them off the beach before they turn blue. The water slides at Wild Waters just off Highway 95 are a delight on hot summer days. However, Silverwood Theme Park gets our vote as the prime family attraction. It reminds us of Knott's Berry Farm about 20 years ago before it became "big time." It's even "recycled" some of the old Knott's rides!

Silverwood is less than a half hour north on Highway 95 on the direct route to Pend Oreile and Sandpoint. We enjoy the air shows and rides in old-time planes here and superbly restored WW1 and WW2 aircraft deserve a look. There's a small theater that shows classic films, a fine puppet theater, the usual monster video game area and much else. The steam train ride which circles this area is a nice way to rest your feet. Kids will, of course, head directly for the amusement park. After all this action, it's nice that there are several restaurants -- try the smoked ribs! -- on the premises.
