PentecostPSALM 16:8-11 PENTECOST/MOTHERS' DAY MAY 14, 1989 ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, BURLINGTON, WI VICAR JOHN HOH It is not often when Pentecost Sunday and Mothers' Day both fall on the same day. This year it does. And at first it would seem an unlikely pair. Yet if we look closely, they are very similar. Today we honor our mothers who gave us birth and raised each one of us. We also celebrate the Holy Spirit and how he gave birth to the New Testament church. Our mothers have guided us through life and, if possible, we still turn to them for advice and comfort. The Holy Spirit also guides his Church and each Christian in that Church from trials, torments and tribulations. In growing up, I remember that my mother was always there for my siblings and I. If I fell and skinned my knee, she was there to patch me back up. Often she treated nail wounds in my foot as I had a knack for stepping on nails. Whatever happened at school, whether good or bad, she was home when I got off the bus to listen and give praise, encouragement or the proper discipline. St. Peter, in delivering his Pentecost sermon, used our text this morning to tell his listeners and also us that God Does Not Forsake Us. He takes care of us physically. He also takes care of us spiritually. The psalmist begins our text today by saying "I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand I will not be shaken." God is always before us in providing for our physical needs. Consider that he created the whole world in six days. And the crown jewel of his creation was man. Whenever you or I spend some time on something, we are proud of our acheivement. We go to great pains to display it and to protect what we have made with our hands. So also God, by creating the whole world, has a vested interest in what happens here on earth. God did not just create the world, then go off and watch. He is still active in creation. The psalmist also tells us that "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." God had created each and every one of us himself. We are all unique and oneof-a-kind. Therefore, since God has created us all himself, he will also preserve us.
