Immanuel in the Creation of Each Person

We all recognize the biological facts of our conception and birth. It all seems so routine. To many the process seems so routine that there is no mystery about it. Added to this is science's limited successes with artificial means of conception. Yet our conceptions and births are miracles. They are re-creations of mankind. God carries out these re-creations himself.

There is something very reassuring in knowing that our Creator has created each one of us personally. In a day when our government, our bank, our employer, and many others cannot identify us without a number, our Creator still knows each of us by name. He personally knows our likes and dislikes. He knows our personalities. He knows the color of our eyes and hair, our height and weight, when we were born and when we will be borne into eternal life. Immanuel! God is with each one of us, his own creations in the flesh!

When God created mankind, Moses reports that it was by a method not used in the creation of the rest of the earth. In creating man, God carefully fashioned man from the dust of the ground. He did not just command that man exist; he formed and shaped man to exist. God did not command the inanimate form to come to life; he breathed into that man his own breath of life. God willed man to be created in his very own image. He created man without sin, with a sense of humor, with an eye for beauty, with the capacity to think in a logical manner, and to communicate with more than just grunts and squeals.

The creation of woman was no less dramatic. First, as we have seen in the last chapter (last week), the animals needed to be named. That was man's first task-the naming of all the animals in God's creation. God had several purposes for this. The animals needed to know that it.was God's will that mankind should rule over them. But God also wanted the man to realize that he was incomplete. He needed a helper suitable for him. God also wanted to make clear to mankind that he was different than the animals. Many today wish to believe that we evolved from the animals or that we are the same. But God points out that there is a distinct difference!

When the man realized that he did not have a mate, as the animals did, man realized that he was not complete. It is then that God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man. During this sleep God took from the man a rib from which he fashioned a woman. This woman became the man's wife. Yes, marriage was a part of God's creation, not a product of societal evolution or a convenience for pre-historic man. God did not rest until the man had a mate and his creation was good.
