Mühlenberg spent the remaining 47 years of his life actively laying the foundation for the Lutheran Church, currently with 5.2 million members the 4th largest Protestant denomination in the US. Henry Melchior Mühlenberg died 7 October 1787, and is buried at Trappe, Pennsylvania. His epitaph (in Latin) reads: "Who and what he was, future ages will know without a stone."
