Christmas Hymns: Someone Special

"Someone Special," Let All the People Praise You, #54

1.
Someone Special, I know who:
That someone, my God, is you!
Who could make a world like this,
And a heaven full of bliss.
Someone special I must be,
Since You made it all for me!

2.
Someone Special, that you are,
To create the Christmas star,
Heralding the Savior's birth,
Bringing peace and joy to earth.
Someone special I must be,
Since You made that Star for me!

3.
Someone Special, who would give
His own Son that all might live,
And by Him would set us free
From all sin and misery.
Someone special I must be,
Since You gave Your Son for me!

4.
Someone Special, who would send
His good Spirit for a Friend,
Faith Creator, Light and Guide,
Always standing at my side.
Someone special I must be,
Since You gave that Gift to me!

5.
Someone special-God and man,
You were there when I began,
You'll be there when I depart,
For You live within my heart.
Someone special-now I see,
That someone is really me.

This week we study another Vajda collaboration with Carl Schalk. This song explains why Christmas came about-because we are special!

The first verse explains that God himself is special. Why is God special? Because we acknowledge that he is the creator of heaven and earth. Notice how Vajda poetically describes the work of God the Father as defined in the First Article of the Creed?

The second verse reminds us of God's promise of a Savior. This promise was made right after Adam and Eve fell into sin. God didn't say, "Oops, we have a mistake. Now give me some time to come up with a solution." Nor did God say, "Well, now, you two have to figure out how to make this right again. Any solutions?" Instead, God first gave Adam and Eve an opportunity to come clean: "Where are you?" "Who told you you were naked?" "Did you eat from that tree I told you not to eat from?" Of course Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the serpent, and everyone shifts the blame. Still, God didn't call the whole thing off. St. Paul eloquently puts it when he wrote to the Ephesians:

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will-to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment-to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. (Galatians 1:4-10)
