Book Review: Immanuel! God Is Still with Us!

The book is divided into chapters such as "Immanuel in the Creation of Each Person," "Immanuel in the Preservation of the World" and "Immanuel Remains with Us - Until the End of Time." Each makes liberal use of translations of biblical texts, mixed with additional material such as extracts from St Augustine and some of the author's own memories of his catechism class. With such a wide range of sources from which to pick, of course, it is possible to put together an argument for pretty well any moral position. Those whose beliefs are similar to John Hoh's will presumably find this to be reassuring and even comforting. Those whose beliefs differ might prefer to reserve their opinions or to take up the cudgels in a suitable forum. The beginning of the book adopts a creationist position and aims to make the argument that God is with all of us all of the time, pays attention to the universe, and answers various prayers and petitions. These will be issues of interest to those holding such beliefs and, given the heat with which matters of dogma and ideology are usually discussed, many will wish to become involved in such discussions. Anyone wishing to learn more of John Hoh's beliefs will do well to read this, which highlights his world view well. I would certainly welcome hearing alternative viewpoints from others who would take more from the book.
