12 Days of Christmas: Day 7

In Romans 12:6-8 Paul writes about the gifts God gave to the church, distributed among the believers:

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

These gifts are to be used as God dispenses them, in the measure he dispenses them. To the Ephesians Paul tells us why God gave these gifts:

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)

As we come together as Christians our talents and abilities mesh so that the Kingdom of God advances. That means recognizing who we are, what we can do, and what God wants us to do with our gifts. Paul expounds upon our gifts and our interaction with our gifts and our fellow Christians when he writes to the Corinthian Christians:

Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
