Blessed Are Those Who Dwell in Your House
17 AUGUST 2003 PSALM 84 SALEM EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, MILWAUKEE, WI JOHN L. HOH, JR. Psalm 84 For the director of music. According to gittith. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.[1] 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! 3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young- a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God. Selah 5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. 8 Hear my prayer, O LORD God Almighty; Selah 9 Look upon our shield, [3] O God; look with favor on your anointed one. 10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. 12 O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you. Footnotes Dear fellow Redeemed: Where do you feel welcome? Where do you feel "at home?" What to you is a "safe haven?" People have always sought to have homes where there is love, safety, and acceptance. You have likely heard the phrase "a house is just a house; love makes it a home." We often view the home as a safe haven for our children, a place to relax and unwind after a long day, and place where families share moments and meals. That same feeling of love, safety, and acceptance is expressed by our psalmist as he declares Blessed Are Those Who Dwell in Your House. In God's House we have Love, we have Safety, and we have Acceptance. We are blessed when we dwell in God's House because in God's House we find love. Love is nurturing. Experts say that you can feed a child the best diet possible, but without love the child withers and dies. Unfortunately we see that today as children are given all kinds of earthly possessions, but are not given love. People who seem to have everything pursue self-destructive behavior and bad relationships seeking love.
