January Gardening In The Low Desert 1999

Happy New Year to all, hope you received a lot of gardening gifts.

Most of us have already started receiving garden catalogs and the struggle begins to pare our ordering lists down to something manageable. Like a computer, there is always something our garden needs or wants. Intense planning is the key if, like me, you have a rather small space in which to put all that stuff you want.

In case you haven't already received more garden catalogs than you can possible order from, the following are internet sites where you can order catalogs and gardening supplies, and most of them have very good gardening info:

Now is the time to prune deciduous trees and you can also prune citrus now to get rid of dead wood and to scale down size of plant, if necessary. Prune shrub roses for shape only and to remove crossing or dead branches. Cut back hybrid tea roses by about a third, leaving the strongest three to five canes to produce this year's flowers.

You can still plant any chilled bulbs you have left and start seeds inside for warm weather veggies such as cucumber, eggplant, melon, pepper, squash, and tomatoes for transplanting out into the garden after all danger of frost is past. Continue planting cool season crops outside where they will get six to eight hours of sun daily. Acidify and fertilize soil and mulch for best results.
