Localization at UQAHThe DESS in localization furthers the objectives of the bac, combining translation and technical writing at a more advanced level. In addition, the curriculum will offer course work in hypermedia, writing for the web and electronic media, as well as localization project management. The program is structured as a logical academic follow-on to the bac but also accommodates localization professionals seeking to acquire specific skills or refine skills learned on the job. While the intention of the program is not to graduate pure technicians, Quirion emphasized the importance of ensuring that students understand and appreciate the technology that permeates the language professions. Beyond their linguistic competence, he would like to see language professionals capable of evaluating a localization project in terms of the technology required to perform the tasks as well as budgeting and scheduling. He hopes that properly trained language professionals will cease to be simple links in the production chain and, instead, will take an active and positive role in determining how production functions. According to Quirion, pure translation and the traditional translation sector will continue to thrive in Canada. The UQAH program, however, acknowledges the growing importance of localization and opens another avenue of development for the translation professional. Quirion hopes that UQAH graduates will be able to take a more active, educated and integrated role in the localization process. Quirion has a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Montreal and is a certified terminologist (OTIAQ). He gained experience in localization while working in the linguistic services department at IBM. This article contains certain errors. Dr. Jean Quirion has let me know that the Translation Bureau did not offer funding, but the assurance to send some employees as students. Also, the e-learning option is considered for the 2003-2004 academic year (and not for this year).
