Care and Feeding of Lizards© Paym Bergson

I've been meeting many people lately who are totally enthralled when they find out we breed Bearded Dragons, and are immediately pounded with so many questions all of the same nature - that I wanted to use this month's article as a quick sheet for Care and Feeding of these particular lizards.
- Beardies need water. But like many lizards, Beardies can be, well, dumb at finding their water source. No, they do not need water on a daily basis - about every few days (no more than four - catchy slogan - so remember it) is right for them. So, you can put water in every four days and hope your lizard finds it when needed. Or you can put fresh water in everyday and hope they will still find it when they need it. Or you can spend mega bucks on those great water fountains and STILL hope they find it when they need it. Actually, Beardies are drawn by the movement and sound - so if your tank is big enough and your humidity not too bad, then the water fountains are the best way to go.
Actually, we take out our lizards and give them water either at the sink (let the water reach a tepid temperature and trickle down - they love to reach out to it) or by water dropper (to get them going) or just dip their nose into the water dish - they get the idea real quick after that. We also ensure we water spray their bodies each day or every couple of days - this is a great way for them to grow (they will shed their skin more often) - and they will actually start to drink the water that falls around them. Yep, we do almost soak them - and they love it. Egg bearing females find this especially soothing and helps to promote their egg laying.
CAUTION - this is NOT for all lizards - for example - DO NOT spray Uromastyx - this is actually bad for them due to their spiked tails which can cause bacterial growth between the spikes.
- Beardies need proper food. Yeah, I know, sounds strange to put it that way - but so many people do not understand that just because a pet store sells a canned or bottled or fresh food for a lizard does not mean that food is actually good on a steady basis (if at all). Beardies need vegetables (dark green is a must), fruit and crickets/insects for their protein. As most insects you see outside may not be the right kind for Beardies - it's safer to just say they need crickets. Mealworms and Kingworms are great sources of protein BUT are too fatty as a steady diet, and it takes its toll on their tiny livers and kidneys. Yes, the worms (including silk worms) are very easy to keep and feed to the lizards - and there is a tendency for us to get lazy and just feed them these tender morsels. But we are not doing our friends many favours with an exclusive high fat diet.
