A Mite-y Problem - Part II

Well, we tried, but it didn't work. Our mite-y problem did not go away using the "natural, environmentally-safe" procedure, and our beardies are not amused.

It started out fine - patience and persistence were the key. So, we followed the procedure - warm, soapy water baths for each lizard, and bleach for their logs/caves, etc. It seemed to work - less mites each day; the occasional set-back; but overall, the mites were going, going, gone! We had done it (we thought!). Aren't our lizards happy now. Hmmm, why is Crystal scratching, why does General look at us with a woe-begone look? Draco is definitely not pleased about something!

Another check told us the worst - the mites were back! Not as bad as before, mind you - but try telling that to uncomfortable lizards. So, now we had to find an alternative that would solve both problems of helping the lizards permanently get rid of their unwanted mites, while satisfying my own penchant for "safe chemicals" if there can be such a thing.

Enter our favourite Lizard expert - Dave. Dave lets us know any new products he's tried, what he's found, and he has always steered us the right way. So, Dave's advice? A product for tics/fleas for dogs/cats - safe enough to use on the family pets and still let the kids get near, but guaranteed to get rid of the "unwanteds".

The process? Simple enough - get rid of EVERYTHING in the lizard's tank - bleach everything in the tub - diluted bleach in the tank (wash walls/floor) - get rid of wood that you think looks suspicious, and if in doubt - throw it out!

Then - sprinkle the stuff (mite powder) into the tank - let it settle for 2 hours- then place newspaper over the whole floor. This arrangement will be the lizards' home for the next few weeks. Bare walls, no caves, no wood, no ladders, no toys....just newspaper bedding (and just sheets, not shredded), water and food dish.

Umm, did I mention our lizards were not amused having mites? Their behaviour at having this new, uncluttered arrangement was met with disappointed eyes, sighs, and resignation. All of them tried to climb the walls; all of them ended up in a heap together for comfort. As you may have guessed, while the mites are living, we cannot take the lizards out too much, to say the least. Needless to say they felt abandoned. Their only source of comfort was their daily baths to rid and check for mites.
