The New Year

The new year brought some changes at Suite 101 and some changes in my personal life that have impacted this column directly.

Because of Suite 101's decision to stop paying editors for their contributions, I can only afford to contribute one column a month. I have to devote some time to paying assignments. However, I am hanging around because I like the Suite and I've made a lot of good friends here who are interested in integrity and quality. I am also a copy editor here at the Suite, and I want to continue making the Suite a more perfect place to read.

I am also spending a lot of time in the tanning bed. In previous columns I have shared my experiences with UV treatment, which seems to be the only thing that has worked with any positive results on my psoriasis. UV treatment at the doctor's office worked beautifully, but at $15 a pop it was getting expensive. Now I'm going to a tanning salon and spending $25 a month for unlimited tanning. Hmm. Even though the tanning bed has broadband UV lamps, it's still working and I don't look like a corpse anymore. Truthfully, I look like I live in Florida now.

In December, I took up yoga and amazingly enough, it has affected my psoriasis. I have a tendency to get psoriasis patches over muscle knots (which seem to be a fact of life for people with fibromyalgia). Yoga is helping me work out the kinks and that seems to be speeding along the healing of my psoriasis.

My outlook on life has improved tremendously in the last six weeks. Tanning and yoga have helped me to understand that when you look good, you feel good. And I look better now than I have in quite a while!

That's not to say that there haven't been any bumps in the road recently.

Yesterday I was almost hit head-on in an area that I hate to drive through anyway; I was able to take my car off the roadway to avoid the accident, but got a flat tire on the way to work.

I've also been helping two close friends through difficulties they are facing. Until very recently I would have been so consumed by my own difficulties that I simply would not have had the energy to help them, but I have been privileged to be able to be there for each of them in their time of tremendous need. I know they would do the same for me.
