Product Review: Derma-Smoothe/FS

In an earlier column, I described the war I am waging against scalp psoriasis. I refuse to give in to the urge to cut the shoulder-length hair that has taken nearly a year to grow out. I had short hair for almost eight years, and like the old TV sitcom claims, eight is definitely enough.

So for the past six months or so, since I decided to let my hair down, the scalp psoriasis problem has been magnified. There's no doubt it's getting worse. In fact, it now covers my entire scalp. The fact that my full-time job is very stressful and I don't get much of a chance to relax the muscles in my head doesn't help any.

I am very responsive to UV light therapy. Unfortunately, it doesn't penetrate the hair, and I have a LOT of hair - so much so that my mother had to do my hair from the day that I was born. It never fell out, either.

At the last six-month checkup, the dermatologist took one look and immediately launched a campaign to get me to try Derma-Smoothe/FS. (That visit also bought me some light therapy - I was in bad shape!)

The package insert has photos that show rather dramatic before-and-after photos of people treated with Derma-Smoothe/FS. One look at these pictures and I was thinking, wow, this is a miracle drug! It's not quite that dramatic, but it's pretty close.

The only real drawback to Derma-Smoothe/FS is that it's a little messy. If your hair is very thick, it can be hard to tell if the medication is hitting the right spots. But it doesn't smell bad, like a lot of scalp psoriasis treaments. And you do have to use it every day, until you achieve total clearance. However, I have had better results with this particular product than anything else I've tried.

According to the FAQ on the Hill Dermaceuticals website, this treatment works so well because the peanut oil puts moisture back into the scalp. The peanut oil helps loosen crusty scales so that the topical steroid medication can penetrate the skin and reduce the underlying inflammation.

If shower caps are not your thing, forget this treatment. You have to wet your hair, then put the oil on your scalp, then cover it with a shower cap. The shower cap is the equivalent of wrapping other areas of your body with plastic wrap to enhance the penetration of the medication (known as occlusion, for you medical trivia types). Then you go to sleep, or leave it on for a minimum of 4-6 hours.
