Have Psoriasis, Will Travel

Last week I took a road trip from Florida to New York for a family funeral.

It's been a while since I've traveled that kind of distance in a car, and it wore me out. We were on the road for four of the seven days, going through mountains and lowcountry, visiting some of my family and some of my husband's.

Now I'm back in Florida, and my psoriasis is telling me to leave it home next time!

My face seems to have taken the brunt of this flare. My whole body had cleared up nicely using a combination of aloe and Psorcon at different times of the day, but now my face has the playing-in-acid-rain look again. I think this comes from the combination of bathing in many different types of water and not drinking as much water as I usually do (about 2 liters a day). I also didn't exercise every day, which didn't help.

We didn't take I-95 like we normally do. I hate that road, even more so because it's in my back yard - I live two streets away. There's nothing on I-95 but trees and it will put you to sleep if you're not drinking coffee or otherwise amusing your brain.

On this trip, we cut across South Carolina and up to Winston-Salem to see my husband's grandparents. They lived up to their reputation as the cheapest, friendliest hotel in North Carolina. They even offered a free dog-walking service, which our pooch Hunter really appreciated. We didn't plan to bring Hunter (he wasn't behaving for the dog sitter) but he sure loved seeing his family.

On the way to and from New York, we took I-81 through Virginia and Pennsylvania. The change in elevation from our coastal hometown made our ears hurt; even the dog was whining. I felt like someone was pouring lead into my body through a hole in the top of my head. All week I felt sluggish just from being at a higher elevation.

On the way back we took I-40 across North Carolina to Raleigh and picked up my mom, who'd been staying with friends for a few days. Our little convoy got caught in a nasty storm in South Carolina but still made it back to my house in about 9 hours, which impressed us all.

What can you do to make traveling a little easier on your psoriasis, or any other ailment you may have?
