Specific Symptoms of PBCJaundice - As PBC advances into the final stages, sufferers can get Jaundice from a rise in bilirubin levels. The liver's inability to process the bilirubin causes levels to rise. People with high bilirubin levels will look yellow, almost tanned even and the whites of their eyes take on a yellowish tinge as well. Ironically, people with Jaundice will often look as if they have a tan, making them appear to look well. There are other ways to confirm a diagnosis of PBC besides the symptoms mentioned above. If you have elevated liver enzymes coupled with any of the symptoms above then PBC must be suspected. It is far better to be cautious and have yourself tested, as the earlier PBC is found the better. My own diagnosis came from my father's diagnosis, mottled palms, itching, an elevated liver panel and fatigue. My symptoms were overlooked prior to my dad's diagnosis, in fact they were attributed to something else entirely. Sometimes we cannot be passive and we must take responsibility for our own health. If you suspect PBC in either yourself or a family member, help the doctor connect the dots. Remember, this disease is little known and any medical professional worth their medical degree will assist you in a diagnosis, if only to put your mind at rest!
