home. A favourite time of mine to visit is in early June when the world's largest collection of lilacs fills the air with fragrance. The Mediterranean greenhouse, abounding with blooms in February and March, is a great place to shake off the late winter blues.

If you want to see some of favourite places in my own neighbourhood, visit the University of Guelph Arboretum. My alma mater is renowned for its biological and environmental programs, which is reflected in the beauty of the extensive arboretum, partly cultivated and partly wild. A couple of my favourite spots, just a 20 minute walk from home, are the Japanese Garden and Gosling Wildlife Gardens .

The most memorable public garden I ever visited is The Butchart Gardens In Victoria on British Columbia's Vancouver Island. Victoria has the mildest climate of any city in Canada. I would guess that the average front yard has more rhododendrons than grass, so the purblic gardens are proportionately glamourous. Butchart's web site has beautiful images from every month of the year.

If none of those public places warm you up, one of the most fun on-line tours is Suite101's own Virtual Garden Tour, with photos and stories of various members' and editors' gardens. I hope these sites give you some enjoyment on a cold winter day.
