A Dog's Life...I Wish

As I write this the U.S. has completed its second day of bombings in Afghanistan. With everything going on in the world right now I'm torn between wanting to forget what's going on and wanting to immerse myself in every single sound-bite of news coverage that I can sink my teeth into. It was difficult for me to come up with a topic for this week. I was sitting at my embroidery machine yesterday (I do have a couple of other things to take up my time besides my furry packmates) and Tessa, our golden retriever, plunked down beside me on the carpet. And as big as she is -- large, not fat -- plunked is just about what she did. The thought crossed my mind about what a comforting sound it was, the sound of a large dog settling down comfortably beside you. Last night we had an amusing incident where I had Scudder, our male black Lab, locked out of the kitchen where he always eats with Tessa, and I was handing out food bowls. You could see the horror on his face as he spun around in place, butt-tucking, pleading with me to let him in rather than making him jump the gate (a forbidden activity for my dogs). It was priceless. As if he was saying, "Mooooommmmmmm, pleeeeeeeze, let me in!!!! I can't eat if I'm not in the kitchen!!!!" (This was identical to the look and act he performed when he was promoted from crating to being baby-gated in the kitchen when we gave Bubbles his crate. He quickly adjusted to that too.) Dogs are funny. They are comforting, they are uncompromising love and affection and devotion. I wonder if children in countries like Afghanistan have the "luxury" of family pets, the ability to bury their face in their fur and wish the horrible world away. Don't get me wrong, I support our President and our military 110%. What has to be done isn't pretty, it isn't glorious, but 6,000 innocent people are dead with countless more to follow if this terrorism isn't ended now. It's horrible what we have to do, but even with what was done to us we still find it in our hearts to drop humanitarian aid where we can along with bombs where we must. Some would say that's the most insane absurdity, but at least we are trying to preserve as many innocents as we can. With all this happening, it's nice to be able to come home and plunk myself down on the floor and let myself be burried by 5 furry, friendly bodies eager and happy to see me.
