Why do so many of us gather clutter around us in the first place? Are we so much like Bower birds that we must feather our nests with all manner of useless rubbish? Is it lack of willpower to withstand advertising? Why did I need an entire cupboard full of used ice cream containers, for example? One or two is all I've ever used. And why did I need those 22 used padded envelopes of assorted sizes? Okay, there's a good argument to keeping a few of each size, but 22?
My mother recently showed me her box of "best cutlery", which she had kept in a cupboard for over fifty years. I'd never seen them before, and since the Queen had failed to visit, they had never been used. My mother told me I would inherit the cutlery when she died. Presumably, I could keep them in my cupboard unused (unless the Queen comes) until I die. It all seemed utterly ridiculous. I suggested my mother use the cutlery, but she couldn't entertain the thought of using and possibly even (gasp!) "spoiling" them. So I asked if I could inherit them before she dies. She agreed, and now I use the silver cutlery every day. I gave my old cutlery away. It feels good to use real silver cutlery, and it encourages me to always have a nicely set table, and use napkins and so on. I use the "best chinaï" when the best people I know come for dinner. And if the Queen does visit (and who knows when that might happen?) I won't even need to dust the plates off! Go To Page: 1 2
