A New Perspective

I was reading an article in a magazine this week about making our own "luck."

This woman had overcome great adversities in her life. She said that the best thing we can do in tough times is change our attitude. It is a great coping strategy, once mastered, to get us through times of even more adversity.

Is there such a thing as luck in the first place?

To that I do not know the answer. But I am confident that our attitude has a lot to do with our success.

So how can we change our attitude? For someone like me, bombarded by mishaps at one time, it's a bit hard - realistically - to "think outside of the box.'' Or even "step outside of the picture.'' Or, my mind.

Recently, life has handed me a myriad of trials. And it took me a while to really listen to myself everytime I blamed God, my parents, my friends...

But when you really listen to yourself whine about your troubles, you can see - really see - how pathetic you sound. Which may motivate you to begin bettering your attitude.

The woman in the article said to look at the positives. She said that for every loss, she instead thought of what she would gain. Sounds impossible when you're in the midst of toil, but with a little understanding, I see now that she is right.

This is not to discount the severity of your troubles. By far, go for it - sulk in them for a bit if you must.

But I think when we can listen to ourselves (regardless if we've gotten ourself in a mess, or life has) we can see that a simple attitude change can make a bad situation a little better.

Recognizing the need for a change in our attitudes isn't always easy. That's why it's best to step outside of your box: talk to a friend, write, participate in a hobby, or even talk to yourself. These are ways to get outside of yourself and be able to look back in.

Once you can view yourself from the outside, you can not only change your attitude...you can look at your life from another perspective, which may help you see what you want out of life, what you may want to change, etc. The possibilities are endless.

As we head bravely into a new year, remember that a good attitude can help you accomplish all you set out to - and pick up the pieces for you should the road become bumpy along the way.
