The holidays are coming up. For many, shopping is the first thing that comes to mind (Hey, this is the 21st century.)
But what can you do when you're strapped for cash but the gifts need to roll on? Or, better yet, what if you've spent a lot of money on other gifts, don't have much now, and still have people on your list? Be creative, of course! I've discovered the art of art. I've painted functional glassware for many people on my list. A soap bottle for mom with an open spout top, designed to match her china. A coffee jar for a co-worker who enjoys a brew nearly five times a day. A lotion jar for another, to keep on her desk. If you have any artistic ability, it's not hard...especially when you're not stirving for perfection. Simple designs to match one's personality (squiggles, hearts, stars) can work great. Acrylic paints (about 99 cents each) come in a wide variety of colors, and can be found at your local craft store. On glass, you can toss over the painting a glitter glaze. It works great on wood, too. For the not so artsy, there are still some options! Practically everyone likes books, even if they are not a reader. You can find picture books, or other kinds that to not strive to be the long novels that many like. But here's the key to get them cheap - http://www.amazon.com. Not only does the site sell new books, but used ones as well. And as someone who has bought many used books off the site, I can tell you that they are in great condition, and you can save more than half off on the regular price of the book. Amazon offers an excellent search engine which makes finding the perfect book easy. If the book is available used, it will say at the bottom of the book description. Not every title is offered used, but many are. Amazon takes care of shipping and may take care of wrapping (check the site). (It's my best-kept holiday secret!) Still in a blitz? Head over to Pier One Imports. Yes, some of their stuff is pricy, but most stores offer great discounts on some of the items. Even if not discounted, they have a large variety of items that can be put together for a great gift basket. Ever consider baking? It makes a good small gift for a distant relative, co-worker, or friend. Go To Page: 1 2
