Spring Cleaning for Health and Happiness

Though the weather outside may say otherwise, but spring is here. Even if you do not live in an area where the weather will be warm during the next few months, spring cleaning is almost always a must during this time of year.

What does cleaning have to do with living, or loving, you may ask? Plenty! By cleaning out your house and organizing your many items, you'll not only get a physical workout, but you'll feel better about living in a clean, organized place. When items need to be found, you'll stress less by knowing exactly where to go. As for loving, hopefully the time that you would have spent looking for missing items or completing smaller cleaning jobs will give you more time with your loved ones.

So where do you begin? Start here:

1. Schedule time when you can clean and/or organize. If you cannot get all of your cleaning and organizing in one day, schedule times when you can. By lumping most of your cleaning together, you'll have fewer smaller jobs to complete.

2. Make it family fun. You can get your children into cleaning by giving them simple tasks to assist you with. Turn on some music and make cleaning and organizing fun. Of course you cannot give your children your bills to file, or the stove to clean, but they can help out by picking up the house, separating items into bins, raking leaves and washing windows.

3. Organize, organize, organize. Plastic bins and shoe boxes work best for organizing items. Purchase some stick-on labels or some permanent markers and things can be kept protected and easy to find.

4. Pay attention to the cleaners you use. Make sure you are using the appropriate cleaners, and are cleaning areas completely. Spots that you would not ordinarily hit during the year should be given special attention, since they do not get cleaned as often. Be careful when mixing chemicals, and make sure your home is well-ventilated when you use chemical cleaners.

5. Don't exclude your car! In addition to the house, it's a good idea to vacuum out your car. This is a breeding place for dust, sand, dirt, and other litter. By cleaning out places such as your glove department and your trunk, you'll have more room to store larger items associated with spring and summer travel.

6. If you haven't already, get to that medicine cabinet and get cleaning. Check for outdated prescriptions and other medications. Make sure you pay attention to this, especially if you have young children. For the ladies, it's a good time to clean out that age-old make up that sometimes tends to store up in your bathroom.
