Happy Holidays, Continued

The holidays are just about over. Presents were given...and returned. Parties were enjoyed, friends reunited, and snow fell, in some places.

So are the holidays just a time of year when we participate in ritualistic events? Or can they be used as a learning lesson? Can the spirit of the holidays and all it encompasses be carried on throughout the year? Should it?

For most of us, we believe that it should. We would like it to, but still, too many people don't do enough to let the caring and giving associated with the holidays spread throughout the year.

So how can you keep on giving beyond the month of December? Here are a few options provided online to help you with continued volunteerism.

-Habitat for Humanity. With chapters world-wide, you can help build houses for those in need as they join alongside you and many volunteers in this housing organization. Want to learn more? Click on over to www.habitat.org.

-Volunteers of America. Choose your charity on this site. Opportunities are available with a click. The organization provides local human service programs and the opportunity for individual and community involvement through the many prospects to help others. Surf over to www.volunteersofamerica.org.

-Do Something. Founded by Melrose Place cutie and all-round-good-guy Andrew Shue, this organization is geared towards young people who form local organizations and perform community service activities. www.dosomething.org is the place for your next activities in the community.

-Points of Light Foundation. This organization is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization devoted to promoting volunteerism. The Foundation is based in Washington, DC, and works in communities throughout the United States through a network of over 500 Volunteer Centers. Surf your way to a better world, click over to www.pointsoflight.org.

-Project America. This organization was founded by three college students with a supreme vision. Project America inspires and teaches people to take positive steps in their communities, and creates partnerships between volunteers and organizations that need them. The organization works with companies, large member organizations, national and local non-profits, and communities to design service initiatives that involve people of all ages in volunteer efforts. Throughout the year, Project America offers a myriad of programs and services that educate and empower individuals to make a difference in their community. Project America also designs specific service initiatives for companies and organizations to involve their employees and members in positive community action. They're all about empowerment! Get involved, go to www.project.org.

-AmeriCorps. Most of us have heard of the organization, but just what does it do? They give people stipends to live on while they complete 1,700 hours of community service in the course of approximately nine months. (For most programs.) It's a great nationwide organization that spans a variety of social causes and makes a difference. Click over to www.americorps.org.
