A Time for Thanks

Thanksgiving is coming up. Besides the leaves turning colors, the pumpkin pie on the table and the big bird cooking, it is a time to give thanks.

What do you really have to be thankful for? Peruse this list of things that will give you a reason to be happy on Thursday, November 23rd.

Children. Whether you have them or you don’t, the future generation impacts all of us. They say charming things, represent our future, and light up our lives. Sure, many of them get a bad reputation when you turn on the news, but there are many children out there who want to make our world a better place. Want to give back? Volunteer at a library, school or church to impact youngsters. They need role models just like you to learn from, at any age.

Food pantries. Sure you want to save the world, but you can’t, right? Wrong! Even when you’re busy, food pantries all over the world give food to those in need all year long. If you really want to make an impact, donate a turkey and some canned goods to your local pantry. For a real difference, organize a food drive or donate food in the middle of the year. To often, people only donate around the holidays, and the rest of the year winds up being neglected. If you’re a parent of a child, you can get your child’s class organized in some sort of food drive. If not, there’s a pantry in your area that can always use your help.

Significant others. You fight with them, you bicker, and you may not be able to stand his or her hygiene habits, but making up is always worth it. Some people are not at the point in their lives to be in love, or in a loving relationship. Those that are involved with others may be in abusive relationships. He is not Mr. Perfect and she is not Mrs. Perfect, but be happy you have someone to hold. Want to show that person you care? Take time out over the holidays to let him or her know how much you care. Show them, tell them...do whatever it takes. Don’t take your loved ones for granted. All of our days are numbered, so make the most of yours!

Health. No matter what health issues you do have, there is always someone out there who has it worse. For example, think of the children with cancer, cerebral palsy, and muscular dystrophy. Better yet, imagine those children and their families that have to deal with incurable and rare diseases for which there is little support. No matter what age you are, be thankful that you are alive. Someone will always have it worse off than you will. Want to make a difference? Be supportive to those in their times of health crisis, and you will find that they will reciprocate that caring.
