Which Region? Europe!

Alright, you’ve been waiting for this series for a couple of months; here it comes! In December, as you may recall, I asked my readers their opinion: which area of the world would they like to know more about, from the expatriate viewpoint. The five areas were Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Starting this month, I’ll be talking about each area and the opportunities that it offers to those of us who wish to live abroad. You’ll find out about work opportunities, school programs for international students, calls for volunteers. In view of the current world situation, I’ll try to inform you about possible security risks, too. And, even though this isn’t a web page for tourism, we all need a break now and then. There’ll be a “leisure” section, with the “usual” and the not-so-usual things to do for relaxation and recreation.

(I’m just feeling my way through this, so if you have any suggestions for topics, you’re more than welcome to say something about them!)

Please remember that the information that I give you is purely for information’s sake, and does not constitute a personal endorsement for such-and-such a place, company, opportunity, activity, etc., from me. So, if you go to Bucharest, thinking that I wrote “Budapest,” don’t blame me if your exuberant “bună!” really needs to be a hearty “Szervusz!”

Let’s start with Europe, the number one vote-getter. The Old World is still such an important part of world history, although its old empires are gone. So much of our current world history has to do with this little continent, from the Greek and Roman empires, the Etruscans, the Anglo-Saxons and so many more. This is one of the reasons that ‘taking a trip to Europe’ is still considered by many to be something glamorous. And, of course, there’s lots to see. So, what’s going on in Europe?

Do you want to work in Europe? How do you find work there? One website to use is www.overseasjobs.com. It speaks for itself. I put in the subject “chef” and came up with seven locations, including Ireland, Spain, France and Russia. (By the way, I’m going to include Russia in Europe, my own personal preference.) Another choice with an employment section is www.oneworld.org, a site for positions in the field of human rights, environment and sustainable development. Down at the bottom of the home page, there is a drop-down menu labeled oneworld.org with a section titled “jobs.” Clicking it will bring you to a search page. If you do a search under, let’s say, Advocacy, Communications, and Fund-raising, you’ll find positions such as Emergency Health Programme Manager and Fundraiser for Minority Rights Group Intl.
