WHAT AREA- EUROPE FOUR

All right, you've had enough to do with volunteering, schooling and/or working. Time to stretch your legs, lean back, kick off your shoes and relax. And, what a place to do it!

Since Europe is still a major destination spot, many do know of its major attractions. For those who want to do 'what everyone else has done and liked'... do you know what the top five destination spots in Europe are? Here's how you can find out. Go to Forbes.com (www.forbes.com), click onto "Europe"- "Jump"- "Lifestyle"- "Travel". Look for the "Destinations of the Week" page. I'll give you an example; In their Dec. 26th, 2002 article four of their 'top ten' destinations were in Europe: Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris (mais oui!) and St. Tropez. But, what about lesser-known delights? Here's a very small sample of what to do in Europe.

First of all, check out SearchEngines.com. (http://www.searchengines.com/reference travel.html) don't forget the "s" at the end of "engines" or you'll get another site) When you click onto their Travel section, you'll see all sorts of sites about how to get around in Europe, official tourism information, world subway maps, currency information, embassies and consulates, even Weather.com. Now, let's narrow down our search to three countries, Slovenia, Liechtenstein and Italy.

I was looking over my Topic Page Links list the other day, and I saw the Slovenia link. (www.slovenia-tourism.si/) So, I did what a good editor should; I clicked onto the link and looked over the page. (In English, of course; it does come in Slovensko!) Just click on "Tourist Offer" and you'll know what to do in Slovenia, or Slovenija. The web site calls the country "The green place of Europe". Yes, there are other 'green places' in Europe. But, judging from the pictures on the web page, Slovenia has a right to call itself such. Did you know, for instance, that Slovenia is surrounded by Austria, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea? Which means that it's got part of the Alps, and part of the same sun and surf that makes Italy so famous as a tourist destination. Another thing that I learned was that Slovenia even has glaciers. It's also known for its over one hundred subterranean caves. Not to mention thermal and mineral springs, with "world-renowned natural health resorts." There's even a section on the site about the different marinas in Slovenia; where to moor your boat, sea border crossings, required minimum equipment, fees for mooring in public harbors, navigational charts, etc. (If you happen to be a rich expat!) So, if your visa lets you hop around in Europe, why not give Slovenia a call?
