Thoughts on litearture and life

Words by themselves mean nothing, but words together mean a lot. When life starts to get busy, the fastest way to relax for me is to curl up and read a book. To immerse myself in another world, a world that is of another time but here in the same country I live in, or in an entirely different country all together. Literature and history are such a beautiful combination, the ability to learn about a time, a place, a people. The joy of literature is the fact that it is fiction; it gives the author liberty to create a story line. A story to show a timeframe in history they have researched, provide a point about an incident that is affecting them greatly.

There are a variety of ways that authors accomplish this goal of intertwining history and literature. It is amazing to me the amount of research that must go into the writing of the books in our time. A couple hundred years ago it was common for the people to write about their times in their books. You still see that at times in today’s world, but it seems more often than not that it is a reflection of our past. A look to see how life was back then, to see what changes have occurred from then to now.

I have a set of favorite books, a set that is not to difficult to read but is full of history. I love to read and see how things used to be. In each book, I am reminded that I have much to be thankful for as well. History has a way of opening our eyes to what is beautiful around us in our own time. As you read through the books of yesterday and today, are you reminded as well of the beauty of our world? I hope so. Enjoy the world of words, for in them are the truths that have survived through the ages, the truths that have brought us to today even amidst all obstacles. The question that always reigns in my mind when I read literature and fiction is will we as humans learn from history or are we going to continue the cycle. By watching recent events I must conclude that it’s unlikely. Unlikely that we are going to ever completely learn from history, except to perhaps better the way we do things and protect ourselves. It’s at times like those I love to retreat to my books and just immerse myself in a world of words, words that are telling a story.
