History through Words and RomanceCowboys, horses and wagons, the wild west, what was it like back when the Western United States were just territories. How did people live, how did they keep their faith, and how did those territories strive and become states? A set of books that I have been reading and very interested in are those written by a variety of Christian Authors. Quite a few set them in Pre-Modern America, during a time where life was simple. The thrill of reading a book that is full of history incorporates the Bible and a fictitious tale of adventure and romance. To watch the weave that is created over the course of words on a page, and to learn. History books provide a mirage of facts, but hardly do they allow you to try and understand what life was like. Life can be difficult in the 21st century but back in the 19th century, life was much more difficult then today. The intertwining of the characters, the truths and the history, are enough to captivate the average reader. There is more to these books though then just fun and a little bit of history. They are an avenue to learn, to learn things that still apply today. Each book shows the common thread of everyday struggles with emotions, behaviors in children, crime and economic hard times. In a time where modern conveniences are rampant, it is sometimes hard to imagine what life was like. Each generation passes its book to the next and each help shape the generation to come. It’s up to the readers to take what you read and see how any of can be applied to your life, in how you change or in what you do. Some authors even use various events in history to build up their stories, with the single hope of showing their audience that there is always more to an event then the simple facts of who, what, where, when, and why. Literature is a great avenue to teach people, it has the ability to do something that non-fiction books don’t always get to do and that is to impact people’s thinking and lives subtly. I learn and get ideas for everyday life, as well as learn about the past by the books I read. I want to take a look into some of the modern Christian fiction books, at how they have incorporated the use of literature and the use of history, to explain not only historical events, but how we can learn through those situations and at how it may have effected the lives of those who have lived them. From the Rockies of the Colorado Territory, to the simple family heritage line starting in England through Vietnam, to the Wisconsin prairies let’ enjoy seeing how history is displayed through literature.
