One of my passions in literature is reading what I term Russian Literature; I have had in my library for sometime Tolstoy’s War and Peace. I decided to start reading it, but before I do I wanted to do some research on the book itself and its author. Knowing some background into this magnificent piece will help me get even more out of the book than by just reading it. Enjoy learning about the book and a little about the era with me.

War and Peace was first published in Russia in 1869. It is considered one of the all time best novels ever written by Leo Tolstoy. Leo Tolstoy was born on August 28, 1828 in Yasnaya Polyana, Tula providence, Russian Empire. His entire Russian name is Count Lev Nikolayevic Tolstoy but is known to the world simply as Leo Tolstoy. He has two novels that are very well known War and Peace and Anna Karenia. Tolstoy is considered a master of realistic fiction and one of the world’s greatest novelists. It has been said of his work that it is not a work of art but a piece of literature. Tolstoy died in the November of 1910 in Astapavo in the Ryazan province.

Leo Tolstoy wrote War and Peace at the height of writing and creativity, his marriage was going great, and life was just going grandly. It’s a historical chronicle of a time frame in Russian history when the empire was at its peak as well. Tolstoy has a way of grasping the attention of his reader and taking them on a journey. The journey he takes you on is three folds in War and Peace that of historical accounts, biographies and essays. The historical account that he is dealing with is the campaign of 1805 between Russian and Napoleon where Napoleon would end up defeating the Russians in the Battle of Austerlity. The next time period during this account is a period of peace, and then ends with Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812. The second part of the novel that Tolstoy uses is by providing his readers the biographies of fictional characters. The use of this idea allows the reader to be enthralled as well as learn about the historical time period in which Tolstoy is describing, and see it through the eyes of an everyday solider. The last part of Tolstoy’s concept with War and Peace is the insertion of essays dealing with the philosophy of history.
