Literary Landmarks Delight Will Rogers Fans



Since its opening in 1938, each year, thousands of people from around the world visit the museum and trace the life of the great American comic who never met a man he didn't like.

The Will Rogers Museum has nine galleries and maintains an extensive research library dedicated to Rogers' life and time. An archive, which is not open for general tours, contains photographs, manuscripts, personal letters, and other Rogers' memorabilia.

Don't leave your children behind when you go on this tour. The special children's museum will have even the toughest young audience smiling before the tour is complete. Literary tourists of all ages will enjoy stepping back in time and learning more about one of America's wittiest men.

In 1935, when Will Rogers was killed in a plane crash, his friend, Spencer Penrose, was in the middle of constructing a scenic mountain drive to enable a majestic view of his city, Colorado Springs, Coloarado. When he heard of Rogers' death, Penrose dedicated the shrine located at the top of the mountain drive in honor of his friend. Today, the shrine contains a photographic timeline of the life of Will Rogers.

Will Rogers; his wife, Betty; and their three children lived on this 186-acre ranch from 1924 to 1935. While in this home, Rogers entertained fellow movie stars and other celebrities. He also spent much of his time in the upstairs "den" writing speeches, newspaper columns, and books.

Today, literary tourists will enjoy touring Rogers' ranch home and gaining insight into his creative processes. The park is open to the public for hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and weekend polo matches.
