Concord MuseumEmerson died on April 27, 1882, of pneumonia. He is buried on Poets' Knoll in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Henry David Thoreau Born on October 12, 1817, Thoreau spent most of his lifetime in Concord. He attended Harvard College where he studied Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. Upon graduation from Harvard, Thoreau returned to Concord and tried his hand at teaching, but soon returned to the family's pencil-making business where he made several technical improvements that affected the quality and production of pencils. Thoreau was also an accomplished land surveyor, surveying property for landowners in and around Concord. Although Thoreau lectured and wrote essays on a variety of topics, he is revered as the nation's foremost nature commentator. Thoreau died on May 6, 1862, of tuberculosis.
