Hampton Plantation State Park

After his retirement, Rutledge and his second wife returned to Hampton Plantation, where Rutledge continued to write while restoring his family home, creating a writing retreat out of the original log house that his father had built. The log house was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, but has since been rebuilt with materials from the original.

Archibald Hamilton Rutledge died on September 15, 1973, in McClellanville, South Carolina.
