From 1942 to 1944, the upper floors of the back annex were home for the teenager, her family, and a few of their friends. Built in 1635, this home has seen several renovations. The most significant renovation in 1739 added what is now called the Secret Annex. Since 1960, when the house was acquired by the Anne Frank Trust, the house has undergone improvements to accommodate tourists. People who have read The Diary of Anne Frank may experience haunting familiarity while touring this home. Anne's diary spanned a period of two years and described daily life in hiding. It was first published in 1947 and has since been published in more than 55 languages. In August 1944, Nazi troops invaded the Secret Annex and arrested the Franks and their friends. Anne died in April 1945 of typhus. Her father was the only member of the family to survive imprisonment.
