Melville moved his family to this charming old farmhouse in 1850. He lived here for thirteen years and wrote many of his most popular works while here including Moby Dick, The Confidence Man, and The Piazza Tales.

Many literary tourists enjoy visiting Melville's writing alcove on the second floor and standing on the porch that Melville built onto the north side of the of 1780s house shortly after he purchased the property. There they have a chance to go back in time and catch a glimpse of imagination that inspired Melville's writing.

In 1975, the Berkshire County Historical Society purchased the house and opened it for public tours.
