According to author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rented rooms in this apartment house from Mrs. Hudson. Now, this 1815 house is maintained as a museum. The interior delightfully imitates images described in the popular detective stories.

Personal items of the fictional characters Holmes, Watson, and Hudson are displayed throughout the three-story museum. Literary tourists are invited to sit in Holmes' arm chair by the fireplace and pose for pictures. And, wax statues allow tourists to envision a face-off between Holmes and Moriarty.

For literary tourists unable to make a quick trip to London, settle back for an excellent virtual tour.

Holmes on American Soil

American actor William Gillette was the first person to portray Sherlock Holmes on stage. He was actually the one who gave Holmes his pipe and deerstalker hat, which by the way, was quite pleasing to Conan Doyle.

Now, take a moment for a virtual tour of The Gillette Castle.

This 1919 castle, located in Haddam Connecticut, is maintained as a start park. Although the home is presently undergoing renovations, literary tourists can enjoy the hiking trails and beautiful gardens that overlook the Connecticut River.

The state park is open from late May through December. Call (806) 526-2336 for information.

While on your virtual tour, read about the American legend and learn about his first meeting with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
