A great time is in store for literary tourists who participate in this year's Steinbeck Festival. The weekend is packed with exciting events beginning with an opportunity for a walking tour of Old Town, where Steinbeck grew up and the inspiration of much of his writing.
The official kick-off event will be on Thursday evening at the Steinbeck Center. The evening will include a wine and cheese reception and dance interpretations of Steinbeck's works.
Whether you are looking for scholarly wisdom, hunting for literary masterpieces, or wanting to soak up local color, there is an event for every interest. Throughout the weekend, literary scholars and historians will present a variety of lectures and a dramatic performance of East of Eden is scheduled. The Book Collectors Fair will provide an opportunity for purchasing rare Steinbeck first editions and a variety of memorabilia. And the many walking tours, including the Cannery Row Tour and the Agriculture Tour, will be of interest to all Steinbeck fans.
The Red Pony Ranch Tour offers literary tourists a special treat. Participants will visit the ranch where Steinbeck spent much of his childhood and experience the surroundings that planted seeds of inspiration for Steinbeck's popular novel The Red Pony (1945).
There will be special meals at the Steinbeck House, a lovely dinner party on Saturday night, and an Awards Breakfast on Sunday morning honoring the winners of the short story contest.
The festival concludes with a traditional Fremont Peak Farewell Cruise, a must adventure for literary tour aficionados.
