Shakespeare's Birthplace
Henley Street Stratford-upon-Avon Warwickshire, UK
Admission charged. The first impression people receive of Shakespeare's birthplace is the beautiful English garden. To approach the entrance to the home, tourists must walk through the trees, plants, herbs, and flowers. From the very beginning, it is easy for tourists to step back in time and enjoy the lovely garden that must have provided inspiration for some of Shakespeare's most memorable poems. Docents escort visitors through several rooms of the home including a parlor and a room thought to have been used as a workroom by Shakespeare's father when making and selling gloves. Attention is also drawn to the room where Shakespeare is thought to have been born and to several rooms that he might have used as bedchambers. A multimedia exhibit is a delightful learning experience. It provides scenes and sounds of the period to recreate many events of Shakespeare's life and work. Nash's House Hours: March 20-October 19--Monday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Sunday 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; October 20-March 19--Monday - Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Closed December 23, 24, 25, 26. Admission charged. Thomas Nash was the first husband of Shakespeare' granddaughter, Elizabeth Hall. It contains many period items dating back to Shakespeare's time and maintains a historical exhibit of Stratford-upon-Avon. Next door to this house is the foundation of New Place, Shakespeare's final home. The house was destroyed in 1759 by the owner as a response to a tax dispute. Shakespeare purchased the house in 1597 when he was at the height of his career. He lived here until 1616; however, much of his time during this period was spent working in London. Although the house is no longer standing, tourists often enjoy walking the grounds and drawing inspiration from the beautiful gardens. Ann Hathaway's Cottage Hours: March 20-October 19--Monday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Sunday 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; October 20-March 19--Monday - Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Closed December 23, 24, 25, 26. Admission charged. Shakespeare is thought to have visited this house on many occasions while courting Anne Hathaway and often after their marriage. The cottage is located just over a mile from Stratford-upon-Avon. Go To Page: 1 2
