Harriet Beecher Stowe


She was born on June 14, 1811, in Litchfield, Connecticut. Throughout her life she was surrounded by strict religious community. She began writing at an early age and soon realized this to be a way to offer moral guidance on contemporary issues. Prior to her marriage, Stowe taught school in Cincinnati. She married Calvin Stowe in 1836; they had seven children.

Stowe's works include-An Elementary Geography (1835), The Minister's Wooing (1859), Religious Poems (1867), The American Woman's Home (with C.E. Beecher, 1869), and many others.

Harriet Beecher Stowe died on July 1, 1896, in Hartford, Connecticut. She is buried in Academy Cemetery, Andover, Massachusetts.
