The Nation Celebrates the Birth of "Papa"

Florida

Sanibel Island - Since the early 1900s, a favorite Hemingway family getaway has been Sanibel Island on Florida's Gulf Coast. In 1997, the island became the site of the annual International Hemingway Festival. The proceeds of this festival benefit the American Diabetes Association. This year's event, scheduled for father's day weekend - June 18-20 - will include contests, golfing, and a kids camp.

Key West - Ernest Hemingway, his wife Pauline, and his two sons moved to Key West in 1931. Their two-story Spanish Colonial-style house is now open for public tours year-round. While living in Key West, Hemingway wrote many of his novels and short stories including Death in the Afternoon (1932), Green Hills of Africa (1935), "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," The Fifth Column (1938), "The Snows of Killmanjaro," For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), and To Have and Have Not (1937).

The Hemingway Days Festival 1999 is scheduled for July 16-25. This annual event is always packed with events; however, this year's 100th birthday celebration will be a spectacular adventure for all Hemingway scholars and fans. Events include a look-alike contest, street fair, fishing, and of course, a running of the bulls.
