A Booker Potentate: William Trevor

What is the message Trevor imparts when a child makes a disastrous and calamitous decision that affects the lives of other people forever? Perhaps it is up to the individual reader to decide the answers. William Trevor suggests however that Lucy Gault has in fact gained something from foolish error; she has experienced the world in a way she would not have otherwise have been able to, she found her own way to peace and she is not 'an unhappy old lady in the end.' There is hope, apparently, for foolish troublemakers after all.
