The Puzzle of the ParrotBut there is more, much more, than all of this: sometimes Flaubert's Parrot is a meditation on the uses and misuses of language, it also seeks to understand the nature of fiction itself, we are treated with interesting facts of literary biography, and to top it all off there is the aforementioned mystery.. There are not many writers of this century, or previous, that would be able to pull this off. Most writers struggle with one form, not several at once. Which leaves us with another reason to read Flaubert's Parrot; Julian Barnes has pioneered a new form of the novel himself. He has pulled out a variety of tools from his tickle trunk, and proved himself master of each .We can be happy that at least someone is finally managing to outdo the innovations in literature since the 19th century.
