Proper programsIn last week's article, I discussed the use of grammar in your work, and the different ways the types of writing affects your grammar usage. This week, I will discuss some computer programs that are available to you as a writer to help you say things the way you want from grammar to word choice. In regards to choosing how you want to say something, there are several dictionary and thesaurus programs available. One such program is called Word Web. This program is a dictionary and thesaurus program with over 160,000 words and 100,000 synonym sets. It can used from within many popular word processing programs including MS Word. There are two versions of this program. But for most purposes, many writers will only need to download the free version. It is about a 5mb download, but is certainly worth it. Several programs come with built in dictionaries and thesaurus' including MS Word and YTS Word Suite. However, sometimes these built in dictionaries and thesaurus' are incomplete. You can also invest your money into a reference set for your computer such as Encarta, World Book or Compton. These programs will come with a dictionary and thesaurus program as well as other references that you would have at your desk or office. If it is a program that will help you improve your grammar that you are looking for, there are some out there. Most are no more than simple reference guides. One such program is called Grammar Slammer. It help style interface is easy to use, and is extremely helpful Another possible program that you might find helpful is called The Writing Wiz. All you have to do in this simple program is plug in the word you want to use, and it'll show you with examples how to use it properly. Both these programs can be found at ZDNet. Just plug in grammar or the program title. What you must remember is to use what is right for you. It might be one of these programs, or it might the old fashioned method and have these references available at your desk in book form. Whatever it is, just do what is right for you a writer.
